A chess grandmaster has the ability to think at least 12 moves ahead in a game. They plan and visualise different outcomes and their counter moves. They are ready. Planning a few moves ahead and following the sequential path of one move to the next is key to business success. A few tips to help you improve is to set aside a day a quarter to set your goals and how to achieve them. Use a flip chart and don’t be afraid of the possibilities of your business. More advanced would be then every month have a day set aside to review and recalibrate as needed based on the previous month's results for the month ahead. This is key, you must be willing to learn and reset for improved performance. Have a vision of where you want to be as a minimum. Write it out, as that is a commitment. Whereas just in your head is wishful thinking.Topic 2 Key Area of ImprovementBusiness NumbersKnowing your business numbers is the difference between success and failure. And crucially it’s the key to your peace of mind as a CBO. If you monitor them regularly you can spot trends and seasonality influences which affect profits. You can identify leaks and plug them. Keeping an eye on your financial information is like looking at the dashboard of your car. A warning light for example if the oil needs topping up, if heeded in time will prevent the car from being severely damaged. Similarly if you watch your numbers regularly it is much easier to pick up things early on that require your attention in order to keep the business successful and you as the CBO happy. A tip to get you started is to ask your accountant or bookkeeper to send you your business money in and money out statements. Get familiar with the costs in your business. Does anything surprise you? Ask why it is what it is. Get curious. Don’t be embarrassed to ask your accountant for a tutorial in how to read the different statements. It’s your business, you have every right to know this stuff. You don’t mind if a patients asks you for a simple explanation of their condition so that they can understand it better. Your accountant shouldn’t mind either.Topic 3 Key Area of ImprovementMindsetBecoming Self aware, Knowing your Big Why for going into business and being ok with discovering that you need help is the path to a happier, more successful life as a CBO. If you don’t love being in business, your business won’t love you. It won’t serve you in the way you want it to. The energy you put in is the energy you will get back. It is a fact that your business is where it is because of your mindset. So, if you want to change your business life and performance, start with understanding where you are now and move forward from that point. This bit is hard to do on your own and my tip is to find a good mentor. Self help books and podcasts are a great starting point but the guidance and accountability offered by someone who has been in your position in their past and managed to move forward cannot be underestimated.Topic 4 Key Area of ImprovementMotivationWe all need a reason to do what we do. Whether it's to keep fit, eat well, go to work..it doesn’t matter. We justify everything we do and motivation is the emotional, biological and cognitive forces that energise us into taking action. Motivation is most powerful and therefore most effective at engaging us to take action when it is intrinsic. We definitely can do something to please others, or for a paycheck but this type of external motivation cannot last. Your motivation for showing up and being that inspiring CBO has to be because it pleases you to do so. And the way your business will continue to motivate you is if it enhances your personal wellbeing. A tip to discovering how motivated you feel about your business is to consider if the idea of work makes you feel expansive, even in tough times because you know it’s taking you towards your vision. Or does it make you feel contracted? Feeling contracted does not motivate you to show up as the best version of yourself every day. What needs to change so that it feels expansive?Topic 5 Key Area of ImprovementCommunicationPeople appreciate knowing where they stand. They appreciate that you ask good questions, respect their contribution and consider their perspective. Clear communication helps generate and keep trust levels high. As a clinician we all appreciate that trust is a vital component in our relationship with our patients. It is just as important in our business dealings. And especially with our teams. As a CBO it is absolutely worth your time and energy in learning to communicate effectively as this can improve productivity and morale. One tip to improve communication in your business could be to start by having an open surgery every month for an hour or two where your team can come and talk to you about anything..be it an idea they have to improve business, a challenge they need help to overcome, or anything they want to share with you. It’s a chance to build relationships. A second tip is to treat appraisal and feedback time as sacred. Don’t just fit it in between patients. It shows that you respect them. Learn how to give good feedback because done right it’s a skill that will greatly improve your business. I also recommend asking for feedback on your communication style and be willing to improve.Topic 6 Key Area of ImprovementLeadership StyleGood Leadership is the heartbeat of your business. This is a huge topic but it’s important for you to know what kind of leader you want to be and also what kind of leader your team needs you to be. This will be different at different stages of the business. What qualities do they need in their leader? How can you develop these qualities so that you feel comfortable demonstrating them daily. A good leader is consistent in the way they communicate, open in the way they share their vision, empowering in the way they encourage others to be the best they can be. I would recommend reading about different leaders, in different arenas, and choose what qualities you admire and bring those into your leadership style. We learn by mimicry and there’s much to be said for learning the art of leadership from a former boss that you admired or mentor.Topic 7 Key Area of ImprovementTeam CultureCohesive teams are one of the best ways to get things done in any business. A group of empowered & talented people forming a team in which they can merge their talents, not only leads to a remarkable amount of energy and creativity being released which in turn improves performance and engagement. They encourage each other to do better business which benefits you, benefits them and your customers. It’s a win,win for all. A tip to improve team culture, encourage team orientated values in your organisation. Provide resources for teams to learn and grow. In your role as the CBO be a team player yourself. Make sure you don’t let the team down.Topic 8 Key Area of ImprovementDecision FatigueDecision fatigue is real and can have a major impact on your life and business. Many CBO’s will do things like schedule interviews at the end of their clinic or they will try to have a performance review meeting in their lunch break or in between patients. They will squeeze in a difficult conversation, be it with staff, supplier or patient if there is a gap in their clinic if someone hasn’t shown up for their appointment. This just causes stress and adds to your load. How effective can you be at choosing your new team member if we are already exhausted from making clinical diagnosis all day. You know you have to bring your A game whilst in the clinic, so do you then relax when you are interviewing your next hire. If you know you have to have a difficult conversation ‘when you have a gap in the clinic diary”, are you distracted when you are seeing your patients? Is your mind already thinking about the conversation that needs to be had. Are you worried you will make the wrong decision because you aren’t able to fully give your attention to either job? My tip would be to diarise in a business day every week to work on business needs. Interview at a time when you know you will be fully energised and alert. Give yourself the luxury of a ‘Blue Sky thinking day. You and your business deserve to work with ease and grace. Don’t you agree?Topic 9 Key Area of ImprovementTime MasteryBeing busy is not always a sign of success. You can be busy because you aren’t organised or effective or efficient with the tasks you need to do. As a CBO you might believe that there is no other way, but to do certain tasks at home or at the weekend. In reality, there’s always a different way. The challenge is that you need to get out of your own way and let go of beliefs that tell you otherwise. Unless you are willing to do this, no time management tool will work. Changing the way you have always done something requires a mindset shift. Do you delegate enough? Do you prioritise your tasks? Do you avoid something because you don’t enjoy it but it’s a part of business procedure. By avoiding it I mean do you spend hours supposedly doing the task but never actually get it finished..so it’s always on your TO DO list. A tip to get you started or improve is to research and pick a time management tool and use it to organise your day. One way could be to batch tasks to energy levels. So in the morning I read, meditate and work on my personal development. I look at my calendar for the day the night before so I can get my mindset correct for the day. On clinic days I take care of any urgent tasks early on in the day so my mind is able to concentrate on patients. You can experiment with the many different tools out there but pick one and commit to giving it a good try. Don’t give up on day 2!! All good systems take effort to implement.Topic 10 Key Area of ImprovementSystemsAs an Entrepreneur you may have had or do have a dream where your business supports your ideal lifestyle ( numerous holidays, time with family, financial success). But it may be that instead your life supports your business (pay yourself last, long hours, working weekends, no holidays, staffing issues taking priority over homelife). One way to get that life as the CBO is to have systems in place in your business. Systems aren’t sexy but they will give you the Holy Grail that most Business owners seek. The ability to choose how you spend your time. Systems help you to plan effectively and achieve operational excellence in all areas from purchasing, diary management and HR to maximising profit. A systemised business is attractive to a potential buyer because they can see that it is possible to run the business without you. So as you build your business in a systemised way, you are also planning your elegant exit, whenever you are ready. It’s a win, win for you. A tip to get you started would be to create some training videos for a new starter. That way you can ensure that every person who joins your business is introduced to the business in the right way. Not the way of the person who happens to be in on their first day, but in the way that is helpful to them and you. Systems in your business will save you time, money, effort and energy.Call to Action 0-33%Our bitesize 'Open Surgery' sessions where we tackle real business issues in a quick, informal way may be the very thing to help you and your business move in the right direction.
